The Higher The Risk, The Greater The Reward

"....The Higher The Risk, The Greater The Reward. - Arnold Schwarzenegger

Pretty simple theory, but I completely agree. Life is not worth living without continued risk. Try something where you might fall flat on your face, and make a regular habit out of it.

Everytime, I get discourage or feel overwhelmed at the amount of work I have to do, I think in a similar way, but it is nice to see a successful person reaffirm it for me. Basically, if you don't feel overwhelmed at times, then your not really engaged with life.

Why Rules are a bad idea in solving complex problems

Often times when I am confronted with a complex problem I am told by myself or someone else of a "way" to solve the problem. I think often times having a prebuilt strategy is a surefire way to kill the creativity necessary to solve a complex problem. As I get older I find I naturally gravitate toward order, design and discipline. This is a good thing generally and a natural reaction to living a younger life of disorder, as most young males do.

Can this thought process get in the way with solving complex problems though? I think it can. When a problem seems to difficult to solve it is a good idea to say, "why did I think I could solve it in this way?". I find this very similar to playing the piano. When I have been stuck in a rut for a while and can't figure out anything new to "invent" I often realize I am making assumptions. I assume the answer is to play in the same style with a slight variation, or to try to use a C Chord as a sounding block. The best way to be innovative is to have no rules....
