half-marathon
run: ran 13.1 miles at 7AM this morning
feeling: I only got 4 hours sleep because I was up until 1 AM working on some code and my book. It was friggin cold at the ING Marathon, and once I got started I was very comforted in knowing that I was only running a half marathon this year.
I had planned before hand to run a very slow pace, and it was a mostly pleasant 13 mile run. One shocker was the amount of hills though. At least 60% of the race went up some type of brutal long incline it seemed. Hills can take a lot of wind our of your sails. My body did feel a bit stiff and I think that had to do with not having much time for road training. I was really only able to run Saturday and Sunday on a dirt trail while training.

paradigm shifting
It is funny how there are infinite paradigm to choose from, and some of these choices can lead to merely existing, and some can lead to thriving. I suppose I like shifting my paradigm often to see what happens, it makes life a lot more interesting that is for sure.

run
run: knocked out a 10 miler on a trail in the woods.
feeling: I felt absolutely great. I got quite a bit of great thinking done as well. One of the things I thought was I need to set even more challenging goals for myself. I will make sure the marathon I run this year, will be an attempt to break 3 hours.
I also thought, how my paradigm often decides my outcome. If I think I can smoke through a ten mile run, then I will. If don't then I won't. This is one of the reasons why I enjoy the weekly battle with running. If I can master pushing my body to the limit, I can do anything any human has ever done, and even some things they haven't.
Getting myself mentally prepared for a sub 3 hour marathon, reminds me that I am fierce competitor who doesn't mind paying the price to win. I guess I do miss playing basketball a bit, as I remember playing games, like sprinting up and down the court over and over until the guy that was guarding me was so exhausted he couldn't guard me anymore.
I also got thinking about the thousands of people that have told me in my life I couldn't do something. I honestly cannot remember anyone ever being right. There are literally thousands upon thousands of words of discouragement, that I have killed and scalped like an Apache warrior. Each one hangs like a trophy on my neck, reminding me of the time and the place.
I don't really get this as much anymore, as most of that was when I was a kid. I remember someone telling me I would never dunk a basketball in junior high because white people don't dunk basketballs. That summer, I did plyometric exercises 5 days a week, and buy the end of the summer, in 8th grade, I could dunk. Dunking a basketball on the guy that told me that, was particularly sweet.
Being a guru at Python is on my radar. Whatever stands in my way of complete mastery of Python will devoured until I cannot consume anything more. Python is particularly fun to conquer, because it is so rich and intricate, and not easily devoured.
Intense exercise enhances my natural competitive instincts and sharpens my edge. It makes me think of Python as large granite boulder that I need to devour with my steel jaws and teeth. I have devoured quite a bit of Python, but it feels like mile 22 on a 30 mile run, I have done quite a bit, but there is still quite a bit to do....and that is half the fun.

run: 3 miles
cardio: 30 minutes precor
feeling: I am running a bit under what I usually run, as I need to give me body some rest for the half marathon next Sunday. I am bit curious about how I will feel, as 13 miles compared to a marathon is a joke. Not sure if it will be easy or not..hmmm.

feeling: It felt really easy. I think I am officially in decent shape, again. I probably could have cranked out another 8 miles quite easily. I also feel super relaxed and got some great thinking done for the chapter I am working on.

Backed Into A Wall With No Way Out
As the impending deadline to get our rough draft for the book done gets closer by the hour. I realize that I like this feeling. I like having no option but to deliver under pressure.
I guess I have always been like this, and have always done my absolute best work when it mattered the most. Having a tangible crisis that requires one result, perfection, without excuses makes me feel the most alive.
ok, back to work....

intervals
1 mile trail + 1 mile track/ 6 x 200m sprints jogging curves + 1 mile trail
total: 3 miles running, 1.5 mile sprint and recovery
feeling: 200 m intervals are highly effective for bootstrapping training. I can't believe how much it improves my long runs. I had to curse out loud quite a bit to finish the last two intervals, but it felt great to finish. 200m intervals require tremendous self discipline to do alone.
Because I have a half-marathon on March 30th, I might not do any more intervals until after March 30th. Not sure how I feel yet. Tomorrow 10 mile run.

feeling: life is not living w/o cardio. I feel much more motivated and optimistic after a brutal cardio session. It gives me an edge, and it makes me feel like I can do anything. I am considering going for a sub 3 hr marathon this year....hmmm...that would take some guts.

April 18th
Just a mental note to refer to later. April 18th is the day. The due date. The end of line. It is mile 26.2. You are on mile 17, you just hit the wall, and can't walk anymore. You feel like might not finish, because you can barely move your legs let alone run. How did you get yourself into this mess. You can't walk and it is 95 degree and you have another 9 miles to run, and about 4 of those miles are straight up hill.
Book is due with final revisions April 18th. Very similar to running a marathon, and nothing was more brutal than that. If I can run that, I can do anything.
Ok, back to work. Check this post again on April 18th.
Oh, and I am craving a 10 mile run tomorrow. It is like stress is special fuel that brutal cardio workouts consume like paper in a fire.

run
ran 3 miles, then 4 x 200m sprints jogging the turns for recovery, then ran 1 mile back from the track.
Feeling: I felt really strong the whole time. The possibility of being able to run 8 200 meter sprints under 30 seconds seems likely in the next 3-6 months. As my track coach in college said, "There is less than .01 % of the population that can run 8 200 meter sprints under 30 seconds." I would bet it is more like .001, but regardless I think running a marathon is less intimidating than 8 200m intervals run all out.
